The United Nations has proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

To achieve its ambitions, the Ocean Decade needs to cut across geographies, cultures, generations, and recognize and address gender disparities in ocean science for long-lasting and impactful change. A continued effort to ensure diversity and gender inclusiveness in ocean science is essential to unlock opportunities and foster the much-needed transformation in ocean science.

As part of Canada’s #OceanDecade efforts they have partnered with Ingenium Women in STEM initiative to tell stories of women in ocean science in order to help raise the profile of their contributions and to encourage young women to consider this career path.  Much of the success of this initiative relies on a “if I can see her I can be her” approach so they aimed to share stories of women with diverse backgrounds, areas of expertise, and career stages.

Their first poster featured a group shot of the women featured in the recent Commonwealth gender report and aims to communicate the importance of gender equity in ocean science. As a matter of pride for India one of the ladies featured was Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Director, Sitara Shipping Ltd and Founder, Maritime SheEO
