On 22^nd July, Institute of Maritime Studies, (IMS) Goa conducted its virtual passing out function of 32 Cadets from 23^rd Batch of Degree Entry. Cadet Vikas Tandel commenced the function commenced with the invocation.

Mr Ashok V Chowgule, Founder Member and Past Chairman SITEG welcomed the Chief Guest, Guests of Honour, Invitees, Parents, Faculty and Cadets. He appreciated the efforts being taken by IMS for training the cadets with maximum skills and competence even during the pandemic. He emphasized that the support of all the shipping companies was crucial for the future of IMS and the cadets. He mentioned that there were good unplaced GME and DME Cadets available for placements. Addressing the cadets he said, “Remember the teaching at IMS and be in touch with your Alma Mater throughout your career. The IMS team would be always pleased to interact and support you.”

In his address to the cadets, the Guest of Honour, Mr Uday Purohit, President, Institute of Marine Engineers (India) spoke on the need to work hard, study hard and make a name. He said, “Explore, excel, get up, be busy and enjoy every moment. Do not indulge with social media. Upgrade your skills, attitude, aptitude, learn and unlearn from tomorrow without wasting a single moment. Build an inquisitive mind and an exciting career.”

Motivating the cadets to enjoy this important milestone in their career was Guest of Honour Mr Suresh Kumar Singh, Resident Superintendent, Valles India Technical Services Pvt Ltd. (Valles Steamships Canada Ltd.) who mentioned that due to pandemic there have been delays in joining vessels. He cautioned them not to be disheartened, to be patient, and work hard to achieve the goal.

Complimenting IMS, Goa, Guest of Honour, Capt Nilesh Kawal Manager, Quality and Training, Scorpio Marine Management (I) Pvt Ltd said that he is selecting Engineers from IMS for the last six years and has been happy with their performance. To the cadets, he articulated that when you are searching for job, please continue the learning process. Make skilling – up-skilling a continuous practice from today onwards. All round development is needed for every Mariner. Each one has to ‘Be in the Moment’.

In his turn, Guest of Honour Capt Rohan Sabnis, Manager, Goodwood Marine Services Pvt Ltd advised the cadets to be ambitious and have big dreams. “It is important to note that adversity brings opportunities. Each cadet should not think of what is covered but what you can discover and rediscover. Remember this mantra – Direction, Determination and Dedication will go a long way in your performance onboard ship. Upgrade your skills, find work, update your technical knowledge and make a difference. Always remember, there is no substitute for hard work,” expressed Capt Sabnis.

Speaking on behalf of the GME Batch, Cadet Carson Pereira shared his experience at IMS Goa. Being proud about his Alma Mater, he appreciated the efforts taken by the faculty, wardens, office staff, catering and janitorial staff for making this “a home away from home” for all the cadets. He said that the staff was like a lighthouse, guiding the cadets all the way especially during these pandemic times.

The Chief Guest, Capt Sanjay Srivastava, CEO, Crew Management, Suntech Crew Management (I) Pvt Ltd. said that he enjoyed being with youngsters. He inspired the cadets to be good speakers and mentors in the future. He said learning the basics, being accountable and honest will be needed for your future. All happens due to the trust you create with others. His message: “Get up, Get Busy, Get out, Explore, Achieve, plan, schedule and be an architect of every situation. Make every effort to excel, at every task you undertake and enjoy the work. Time is limited aim high, aim Big, stay foolish, stay hungry and go for it.”

Mr Dipak B Shah, Director, IMS Goa proposed the vote of thanks. He thanked the Chief Guest, Capt Srivastava for his support and perfect guidance to the cadets; Mr Purohit and IMEI for being strong supporters of IMS since inception; Mr Singh who took his time from his busy schedule and motivated the cadets; Capt Kawal for appreciating IMS and its Engineers; and Capt Sabnis for an inspiring passing out speech and showing interest in IMS training.

He expressed his gratitude to all the staff of IMS who dedicated themselves to cover all the topics of Workshop and Afloat in the last 127 days. He appreciated the role of Chairman, SITEG, Managing, Governing, Monitoring Committee members for their continued support and commitment in upgrading IMS training. He expressed special recognition for the sincere and exemplary efforts by IMS team members Heston Dias – Lecturer, Rohidas Vaigankar – Sr Training Instructor, and Francisco Fernandes – Training Instructor. They were presented with an appreciation letter by Mr Ajay A Tambwekar, Deputy Director, IMS Goa. He thanked the parents for having faith in the IMS team in the last 4 months.

He appreciated the efforts of all the cadets in performing patiently during their IMS training.

His message to the cadets was “The learning at IMS should always remain fresh in your mind, be committed to IMS motto, knowledge, competence and discipline will hold you perfectly balanced in your career.”
