The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, the professional body for the commercial shipping industry worldwide, officially welcomed its new executive leadership team at the Controlling Council meeting in October.

Taking over the baton from Susan Oatway FICS as the new International Chair of the Institute will be Glenn Murphy FICS of the Ireland branch who has been Vice Chairman of the Institute for the past two years. Working alongside Mr Murphy will be Luis Bernat FICS, a former Chairman of the Denmark branch, who takes up the position of Vice Chairman of the Institute.

Glenn is a Fellow of the Institute with over 30 years’ experience in international shipping working for both private and public sector bodies. He runs his own shipbroking firm based in Dublin and he previously served as a Director of the Marine Institute and also on the Board of the National Maritime College in Ireland.

“I am humbled and honoured to have been elected as the Chairman of this remarkable institution. I have spent my entire career working in shipping and the Institute has always stood for three things to me. Firstly, its pursuit of setting the highest professional standards for Members, followed by an unwavering commitment to educating its students and most importantly its principles of integrity. In an ever-changing and unpredictable world, I believe that these values are even more important,” expressed Glenn Murphy FICS – Chairman, Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

Outlining his goals for the coming two years, Glenn Murphy says, “During my term as Chairman, I fully believe that the Institute should continue to set the highest standards for our industry every day through our Members and staff but also through our pursuit of excellence in educating our students who will be our leaders of tomorrow. We have recently transitioned through an extremely challenging period as an organisation but importantly we have learned some valuable lessons that made us focus on improving both our financial and corporate governance. I do not doubt that this experience has made us stronger and that we will continue in our pursuit to ensure the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers remains a relevant and progressive professional body in global shipping.”

Kevin Shakesheff FICS, the Institute’s 58th President says, “Glenn Murphy’s knowledge and experience in the Shipping Industry will prove an absolute asset to our Institute at this time. The Institute has emerged, after a difficult time with a leader who will drive us forward and continue to develop the organisation into a global maritime Institute. My best wishes to Glenn and our new Vice Chairman Luis Bernat who like Glenn has a wealth of experience in shipping both in the UK and overseas. We are most fortunate to have two new officers with such excellent credentials.”

Luis Bernat brings 46 years of shipping experience to the service of the Institute and is taking on his role as Vice Chairman with plans for united cooperation, “I am a firm believer in teamwork and joining Kevin and Glenn is of course in this spirit. I am looking forward to working with Glenn in his new leadership role and supporting the excellent work of the branches and all our Members,” said Luis Bernat FICS – Vice Chairman, Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.
