47 HL – AMET offers scholarship for the fishermen community students to pursue maritime degree programmes

AMET University, established in 1993, has been extending generous financial support in the form of Scholarships to various categories of students who pursue maritime degree programmes. The University provides more than 700 scholarships with an average cost of Rs 2 crores every year.

 

In this context, 167 students from Fishermen Community were provided with scholarships worth Rs.59.59 lakhs in a grand Scholarship Distribution Ceremony held on 12th March this year at the University.

 

Honorable Founder Chancellor of AMET University, NAESEY Dr J Ramachandran, in his Presidential Address has highlighted the importance of giving scholarships exclusively for the Fishermen Community. The University firmly believes that the youngsters from the Fishermen Community have their traditional trails of knowledge on sea and also have the innate physical ability for the extended endurance for sea life. The main purpose of this scheme is to bring in fishermen to help the industry in a way. They will not quit sailing and continue as seafarers without fearing the rough weather and tough life in sea. All over India, the Fishermen Community is one among the downtrodden community. By giving them scholarships, the University is making them empowered to get Maritime Education otherwise would be a dream for them.

 

Scholarships, Fee reductions and special coaching to the Fishermen Community students at AMET University make them successful seafarers which actually make their lifestyle better and contribute to the economy of the Nation as well. The University has witnessed that the number of Fishermen Community Students to enroll in Maritime Programs is increasing year on year due to the scholarships and special attention provided by the University.

 

Honorable Minister for Fisheries, Fishermen Welfare and Animal Husbandry, Government of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Anitha R Radhakrishnan, has distributed the scholarships and delivered Special Address. The Honorable Minister has conveyed that the University is actually transforming the Fishermen Community by encouraging their younger generation to pursue their Maritime Career.

 

The Honorable Minister also appreciated the efforts by the University for providing excellent placement through their innovative initiative Admission with Appointment Order.

 

Col Dr G Thiruvasagam, Vice Chancellor AMET University has declared that the Management of AMET has provided scholarships worth Rs 10.87 Crores in last five years of which Rs 1.4 crores is distributed exclusively to the students from Fishermen Community. Col.Dr.G.Thiruvasagam has appealed to the Honorable Minister for Fisheries, Fishermen Welfare and Animal Husbandry Mr. Anitha R Radhakrishnan that the University may be supported by the Government to establish Integrated Research Centre for Maritime Studies and also to permit the University for establishing a Community Radio for the benefit of nearby coastal villages. He also requested to increase the number of scholarships given by the Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu considering the large number of Fishermen Community students taking up Maritime Programmes.
