The Institute of Maritime Studies, Goa is celebrating its silver jubilee year. Throughout its journey IMS Goa has become one of the prestigious institute in the country and its students are in demand in the industry. In a recent seminar at Hotel Mirage, Mumbai on 27th May, ace personalities from the industry appreciated the institute and its quality of training and education.
In his welcome address, Mr Dipak B Shah, Director, IMS Goa thanked the industry for supporting the institute and hoped to get this support in future too.
With technology hitting the industry hard like never before, the training institute has the responsibility of training its cadets with newest of the new technology, so ‘Future Trends in Shipping’ was the topic selected for IMS annual seminar. “We realised the importance technology during the pandemic period,” said Mr Shah. COVID-19 has taught us importance of technology in every sector including education such as online education, online meeting and fastest ever changing technology to meet the needs. And also, the shipping industry has gone through rapid changes.
The seminar highlighted the few products that will surely make huge impact in the future. ‘Impact of Virtual reality in seafarers Training (VR)’ was presented by Mr Prasad Sawant, CEO, M/s Buoyancy Consultants and Engg. LLP. He introduced his company and his product VRIXIFY and explained the importance of shifting to virtual reality. He said that his company is also working on interactive and immersive training environment. ‘Alfa Laval E- Power pack’ (VR) was presented by Mr. Amit Khanduri, Industry Manager, Marine Division, M/s Alfa Laval. He spoke on waste heat recovery solutions and also on powering the way to energy savings and compliance etc.
This was followed by a panel discussion chaired by Dr Sanjay Bhavnani, Director & COO, MMS Maritime (India) Pvt. Ltd. He shared his experience of getting associated with IMS Goa. “When we inducted students from IMS, they already had hands on training and knowledge, so we have increased the intake of students from IMS Goa,” stated Dr Bhavnani. He also suggested that IMS Goa should focus on maintaining this level of quality training and education. Several questions were raised during the panel discussion.
Shri Gurmeet Ranghar, Training and Development Manager, Ms Seaspan Crew Management spoke highly about the training conducted at IMS. He mentioned about his interaction with the Directors of IMS and their dedication towards good training. He mentioned that the latest technology should be inculcated at the pre sea level.
“We are associated with IMS for 2 decades now. I must say IMS Goa is one of the best in country and soon it will become one of the best in the world. IMS cadets are doing wonderful job onboard the ship,” appreciated Mr Bijay Yadav, Head of Academics, IMTC.
“IMS is in the forefront in marine engineering training, we need to give them a chance and help them grow to the highest level,” stated Mr David Nazareth, General Manager, Wallem Shipmanagement.
Alumni of IMS Shri Vishal Sharma, Dy. General Manager Training Division, K – Line Ship Management, Mumbai, and from the 2nd GME batch shared his nostalgic experience of studying in IMS with the audience.
IMS blends technical up-gradation with professionalism and equips the engineers with strategic communication skills, vital critical thinking ability, and a high sense of responsibility.
Mr Tanuj Kumar, Assistant Director, IMS concluded the session with his thank you note. The seminar was compered by Dr Sunay Pai, Assistant Director, IMS.
The interactive panel discussion was followed by networking, cocktails and dinner.
