Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC), Mumbai received a request from MRCC Colombo regarding flooding onboard Sri Lankan Fishing Vessel (SLFV) “Amila Seafood-Tuna 01” with 05 crew onboard around 996 Kilometers from Indian mainland (Goa) due to a defect on the engine.
Considering the distances involved as well as inclement weather and urgency, MRCC Mumbai activated International Safety Net and located MT Altair, the nearest vessel. The Master of the vessel was convinced and requested by MRCC MUMBAI to rise to the occasion in saving 05 fishermen’s lives.
The motor tanker with 22 crew was bound for Mauritius from Fujairah, UAE. The Master and crew rescued 05 fishermen in challenging sea conditions as the fishing boat was sinking.
The Master was guided during the rescue operation continuously by MRCC Mumbai in an operation that was conducted during the night.
The successful operation and seamless coordination of M- SAR around 996 km from the mainland in the Indian Search and Rescue Region by MRCC MBI reaffirm ICGs capabilities as a nodal agency for M-SAR in the IOR and Indo Pacific Region.
