The effects of ship emissions have become a subject of great environmental concern.
Helping to drive sustainable maritime solutions is Monaco-based Scorpio Tankers Inc., who have started to demonstrate a new fuel-emulsification technology on their tankers.
Scorpio Tankers have partnered with FOWE Eco Solutions who have developed a patented emulsification technology to produce a fuel oil-water mixture.
Commenting on the move towards backing decarbonization, Scorpio Chief Executive Emanuele Lauro said, “We see the path towards decarbonization as a series of incremental steps, rather than one simple leap.”
FOWE’s patented device, called Cavitech, produces stable emulsion without using additives. During operational tests in both four stroke and two stroke engines during voyages in Europe, burning the emulsified fuel reduced particulate matter and GHG emissions, and improved fuel efficiency. It also materially reduced sludging. The demonstrations were observed by DNV and CSSC Marine Power co. ltd (MAN Licencees)
The emulsified fuel can be produced onshore or onboard the vessel, and there is no requirement to make any changes to equipment onboard the vessel.
Cavitech can also help oil storages who can benefit from its desludging capabilities, improve their light end yields, and improve fuel efficiency in boilers. The technology has been already been tested for several years in a European refinery.
Talking about the collaboration, FOWE Founder & Chairman Branko Vugrinec, said, “We are pleased to demonstrate this technology with the support of Scorpio. Cavitech is a user-friendly device, which can be safely operated on board. The test leads to reduction of harmful emissions of CO2, without disrupting the food supply chain.”
Scorpio has endeavored to support the cause to monitor and diminish GHG emissions earlier too.
