Mr Subodh Sabu – Third Officer, had been under detention in Ningbo Jail, China, since 20th April 2019. Due to COVID-19 and due to long legal procedures in China the case could not conclude as fast as anticipated.

Sabu’s family approached The Maritime Union of India, (MUI), which under the leadership of its General Secretary, Capt. Tushar Pradhan, took a compassionate stand and then approached the Ministry of External Affairs, the Directorate General of Shipping, and all the other relevant government authorities to assist in concluding proceedings at the earliest and ensuring his rapid return home.

MUI was continuously in touch with the family of the seafarer and extended all support over the last three years. Once the new General Secretary, Capt. Pradhan took over in early August, MUI followed up the case with renewed vigour with the Indian Embassy in Shanghai.

Finally after completion of all legal and travel formalities, the officer returned back to India on the 30th September 2022.
