09 HL – Striving further to improve working culture for seafarers

On 23rd January Mr Stephen Cotton, General Secretary (ITF) and Ms Baker Khundakji, Young Transport Workers’ Officer (ITF) met Mr Milind Kandalgaonkar, NUSI General Secretary-cum-Treasurer; Mr Abdulgani Y Serang, NUSI Advisor along with the seafarers and shipping fraternity at Indian Sailors Home Society in Mumbai.

 

In his address, Mr Cotton appreciated the seafarers for their role during the Covid pandemic and emphasized the importance of skill development and how Indian seafarers are in demand worldwide. He assured the seafarers that the various maritime regulation and conventions ITF will continue to safeguard the interest of the seafarers and further strive to improve the working culture in general.

 

Mr Cotton further stressed on the importance of having more avenues to provide advanced training for seafarers as India has a lot of potential in the world maritime industry. He also spoke about the climate crisis as one of the biggest challenges faced today all over the world and the immediate need to address the same.

 

Mr Cotton and Ms Khundakji laid wreath and paid homage at the Seafarer’s War Memorial at ISHS. He also visited the Seafarers Centre comprising of fully equipped Gymnasium, Indoor Sports, Yoga Hall, Medical and Counselling room at the ISHS.
