19 HL – IIT Madras and Indian Maritime University Together To Promote Studies in Ocean Engineering – KC

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) and Indian Maritime University (IMU) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote education in the field of Ocean Engineering.

The MoU was signed by Dr.Rajoo Balaji, Dean in charge, Indian Maritime University (IMU) and Prof. K Murali, Dean (Faculty), Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT-M in the august presence of Dr. Malini V Shankar, I.A.S. (Retd.), Vice Chancellor, IMU and  Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT-M on 27th February, 2023 in IMU-HQ in a modest function completing the formalities.

Mr. K Saravanan, Registrar IMU, delivered the welcome address on the occasion and Cmde KD Joshi (Retd), Controller of Examinations, delivered the vote of thanks to conclude the program.

The objective of the MOU is to initiate a cooperative agreement in order to promote the following activities between both the Institutions:-

  1. Initiatives identified under Maritime India Vision 2030,
  2. Collaboration of faculty members and Exchange of students,
  3. Joint research activities, d) Conducting Joint PhD Programs ,
  4. d) Conducting Joint web M Tech programs,
  5. e) Organizing seminars and academic meetings for better exchange of knowledge, f)   Development of long/short term programmes,
  6. g) Enabling courses for national credit bank,
  7. h) Programs for capacity building in Industries along with various initiatives for student outreach.

While the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) is a statutory body constituted under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 and is known for excellence in technical education, basic and applied research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industrial consultancy, the Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University established through an Act of Parliament in November 2008 and is poised to play a key role in the development of trained human resource for the maritime sector.

Originally conceived as the Ocean Engineering Centre (OEC) in 1977, the Department of Ocean Engineering (DOE) has since focused on offshore engineering, naval architecture, as well as research and development in wide areas of the ocean. The department, which boasts a 3000-square-metre laboratory area, strives for excellence in the areas of education, research and training programs while supporting developmental efforts within various marine industries.
