The National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), one of the oldest trade unions for seafarers, serving since the year 1926, in association with the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) one of the national trade unions with a history of 75 years, celebrated the NUSI Founder Shri Mohamed Ebrahim Serang Day, on Tuesday 9th May, 2023, in Mumbai to honor the legacy of the great leader.
The event Presided over by NUSI President, Capt. Nand Hiranandani, was attended by over 1500 seafarers, including several eminent personalities from the shipping fraternity. Following the norms of NUSI, welfare financial assistance to seafarers and their families was also distributed.
The event began with a speech by Mr Abdul Rehman, the grandson of late Mr Mohamed Ebrahim Serang, recalling an inspiring incident as a kid, thus validating the legend.
Mr Milind Kandalgaonkar, General Secretary & Treasurer, NUSI then followed, elaborating upon various initiatives of the NUSI team to support the welfare of seafarers and their families in its pursuit to be a leading national seafarers’ union.
The Guest of Honor, Mr Venu P. Nair, General Secretary, National Railway Mazdoor Sabha (NRMU C.R./K.R. Mumbai), shared his thoughts on maintaining the importance of unions and the role they play in protecting employees’ rights.
The Chief Guest for the event Mr Sanjay Vadhavkar, General Secretary, Hind Mazdoor Sabha Maharashtra Council – (HMS), delivered an insightful speech on the importance of seafarers in India’s economy and how NUSI implements seafarers’ welfare schemes in society thus acting as a role model for trade unions in India. He also appreciated the NUSI welfare initiatives for seafarers and their families.
Capt. Tushar Pradhan, General Secretary, Maritime Union of India (MUI), delivered his thoughts on the challenges faced by seafarers and stressed upon collective efforts of NUSI and MUI towards providing a solution.
Capt Rajesh Tandon, Varuna Awardee, CEO FOSMA, also shared his experiences with the audience.
The evening concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr Louis Gomes, NUSI Vice President, followed by a grand dinner, providing an opportunity for the guests to network and socialize.
