On 06th June, the Institution of Engineers India in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Engineers India and the Institution for Innovation Industrial Engineering and Entrepreneurship Mumbai organized a seminar titled Sailing towards a Circular Economy: Imperatives and Opportunities in the Maritime Sector at Engineers’ Bhavan Shimla, by Shri Sanjay Kundu, Director General Police, Himachal Pradesh, a distinguished alumnus of DMET and the former Marine Engineer from Great Eastern.
This glittering and grand event with the overflow of participants was attended by many distinguished members of IEI and IMEI, delegates from across India and abroad, Students, Senior Naval officers, Industrialists, Academicians, Environmentalists, Government officers, Faculties, Media, and final year Engineering Students. Many HSSC students aspiring to make Marine Engineering as a career also participated with their parents. One of the participating students of the seminar was given placement, and two were on the select list. For the first time in India two young girls were selected by VR Maritime Services to be joining foreign Shipping Company as GP Ratings. These girls belong to very humble and rural background of Himanchal Pradesh.
The marine seminar was the brainchild of Cdr Dr Bhaskar Bhandarkar, the illustrious, energetic, and dynamic Chairman of the Marine Engineering Division of IEI.
This historical seminar, the first of its kind in the history of Marine Engineers in the Northen region of India, was the fallout of the successful conduct of the Chandigarh Seminar jointly conducted by the IEI and IMEI Chandigarh Chapter under the visionary leadership of Er Arun Kumar Agarwal, Chairman of the Chapter.
Mr. VK Jain, President IMEI, and Dr. P.L. Sharma, Director, University Institute of Technology, Shimla were the Guests of Honour. Captain Sanjay Prashar, MD, M/S VR Maritime Services, and Mr Sanjeev V Mehra, MD, M/S Kenmark Tech Solutions were special invitees. The seminar was amazingly hosted and organized by the Himachal Pradesh State Centre IEI under the dynamic leadership of Mr Vishva Mohan Joshi Chairman of HPSC IEI Shimla. The marine seminar was graced by Dr. Raju Mankar, Director LIT Nagpur and Former Vice Chancellor DBATU, Dr. Labh Singh Chairman IEI P&C Centre, Prof Salodkar Punjab Univ Chandigarh, Dr. Anand Hiremath, GMS, DMCC Dubai, Commodore Roopan Bembey, NauSena Medal (Retd),Indian Navy, Mr. Hardeep Cheema MD Cheema Boilers, Mr. Pankaj Dadwal Chairman NSDF IEI, Er Jaswant Singh Hon Sec HPSC, Captain Dr Nitin Agarwala (Indian Navy), Dr Shallu Sehgal, Shoolini Institute of Life Sciences and Science Management Solan (HP).
The two day seminar was a grand success and achieved its goals. It was a great opportunity to spread awareness about Marine Engineering and Maritime opportunities in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh. We were also able to knit the Marine fraternity into a cohesive and result-oriented team.
Cdr Dr Bhandarkar also shared his vision of taking the flag of the Indian Marine fraternity abroad with plans of having such events in Colombo, Dubai, Singapore, Hongkong, and the USA. He received a huge and encouraging response from many organizations.
