It was a momentous occasion for HIMT College to welcome the esteemed Director General of Shipping, Mr Shyam Jagannathan on his official visits to both HIMT Pre-Sea Campus in Kalpakkam and Post-Sea Campus in Tidal Park, Chennai, on August 3 and August 5 respectively. The visit was also graced by a distinguished delegation of senior officials from MMD, Chennai; esteemed personalities such as Mr Satish Kamath (Engineer and Ship Surveyor cum DDG (Tech), Mr KM Rao (Principal Officer-cum-Jt. DG (Tech)), Mr S Satyanarayanan Murthy (Engineer and Ship Surveyor cum DDG), Capt V Pardhasaradhi (Examiner of Master & Mates) and Capt Hemant Jarwal Nautical Surveyor cum Deputy Director General (Tech)) added immense value to these significant visits.

Upon arrival at the Pre-Sea Campus on August 3, Mr Jagannathan was warmly received by Mrs. Tarangini Vakil, Director of Finance; Mr Sanjeev S. Vakil, CEO; and Capt. Anand Subramanian, Principal of the college. The day was inaugurated with a splendid ceremonial parade by senior cadets, who left a glorious impression on the Director General with their discipline and decorum. Following this grand welcome, Mr Jagannathan planted a sapling in the main avenue in HIMT College Campus. He then met the faculty and staff of HIMT College. Later he was escorted through the state-of-the-art facilities in the campus – including the Ship-in-Campus, Swimming Pool, Seamanship, and Virtual Reality Labs. This leg of the visit was marked by the inauguration of the cutting-edge Steering Simulator, setting new standards in maritime training.

In the evening, Mr Jagannathan addressed a special assembly, leaving an indelible impact on both faculty and cadets. His motivating words on developing qualities like leadership and camaraderie resonated deeply with all cadets. He motivated and inspired the cadets to have perseverance to achieve success in life. He advised the young cadets to work hard, upskill themselves and take the flag of India higher in the Maritime realm.

The festivities continued on August 5 at the Post-Sea Campus in Tidal Park, Chennai. Here, Mr Jagannathan inaugurated the advanced Full Mission Ice Navigation Bridge Simulator and Full Mission Engine Room Simulator. These high-tech simulators, equipped with the latest MEGI and RTFlex engine modules, promise to be significant game-changers in maritime training.

The visits were a testament to HIMT College’s commitment to global quality standards in learning and professional excellence. The visionary approach and invaluable insights shared by Mr Jagannathan have given us a much-needed direction to forge ahead. His emphasis on compliance with STCW and adaptability to evolving technology has profoundly inspired us.

We at HIMT College are thrilled at the prospect of future collaborations to advance the maritime interests of our great nation, India. Under the wise stewardship of Mr Jagannathan, we are confident that India’s shipping industry will achieve unprecedented milestones, and we are excited and embrace the opportunity to work collectively toward a thriving maritime ecosystem.
