Ship recycling is a critical component of global sustainability efforts, requiring the combined commitment of nations and stakeholders worldwide.
Ship recycling is not solely a European concern; it has global implications. Often, regional regulations can inadvertently favour a few powerful nations while neglecting the interests of others. To address this, I emphasize the importance of broadening our perspective and fostering global growth through cooperation and coexistence.
The European Union’s Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR) and the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) are essential aspects of ship recycling governance. However, there is uncertainty surrounding the EU’s promise to abolish the EU SRR once the HKC is fully in effect. This uncertainty, coupled with the complexity and overlap of rules, has led to confusion among stakeholders.
I advocate for a unified global standard that ensures safe and environmentally sound ship recycling practices. This involves phasing out the EU SRR and applying the principles of the Basel Convention to the ship recycling. By doing so, we can provide much-needed clarity and consistency for the maritime industry, promoting sustainable practices worldwide.
For the sake of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and global harmony, Europe must move away from Eurocentrism. Regional laws that favour a select few nations risk undermining the shared goal of global coexistence and prosperity. It is crucial to recognize the importance of a collective approach in addressing ship recycling issues.
India serves as a positive example of responsible adherence to HKC standards. The nation’s commitment extends beyond its own interests, considering the concerns of all nations involved. India demonstrates the value of cooperation and respecting diverse viewpoints as we tackle complex global issues together.
To achieve a sustainable future, we must advocate for a fair and equitable international order that respects the sovereignty and rights of all nations. This involves challenging the dominance of a few nations in shaping global agendas and ensuring that rules are applied consistently and equally to promote inclusivity and success.
Genuine solidarity and trust among nations are imperative for addressing complex global challenges. This means respecting territorial integrity and refraining from interfering in the internal affairs of other nations. By adopting a fair and equitable approach, we can foster trust, cooperation, and a stronger global community.
