In the heart of Pune, on a crisp 7th October morning, the maritime community came together to celebrate the “World Maritime Week Awareness March Past and Celebration.” This event, organized by the Maharashtra Academy of Naval Education and Training (MANET), was a resounding testament to India’s commitment to the maritime industry. In the presence of Prof. Dr Mangesh T Karad, the distinguished guests including Mr Shripad Naik, Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways of India, and Mr Shyam Jagannathan, Directorate General of Shipping, Dr Pandurang Raut, Deputy Director- General of Shipping, Capt Dr Shashank Jahagirdar, Managing Director- Synergy Group, Mr Kedar Choudhary Director- Oil Spill Combat Team, Capt Shrirang Gokhale Head- CMMI, Pune Chapter, C/E Sanjiv Ogale Chairman- IMEI, Pune Chapter, Mr Suhas Mate President- Akhil Bhartiya Navik Sangh (ABNS), Mr Minanath Jagade General Secretary- ABNS, GM-Seafarers Club, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, Capt Asha S Alagappa Defence Veteran- Founder Gyan Darshini, Mr Rajaram Lahane, Mr Gajanan Kendre- Branch Manager- Chate group along with other dignitaries graced the occasion.
The event started with a stirring address by the honorable Minister Mr Shripad Naik followed by Mr Shyam Jagannathan and Prof Dr Mangesh T Karad. They highlighted the rich maritime history of India, dating back to 3500BC. These historical trade links with civilizations such as the Greek, Mesopotamian, and Mediterranean rim countries have shaped the nation’s history and culture. Their words resonated with the audience, reminding them of the wealth and prosperity that the sea has brought to India.
The culmination of the event was the March Past by the MANET cadets. These young men and women, dressed in their pristine uniforms, proudly paraded through the city’s major streets. Starting from Balgandharv Rangmandir, their route covered iconic areas like Fergusson College Road, Jangali Maharaj Road, and Balgandharv Rangmandir Chowk. The cadets’ enthusiasm was infectious, and the city’s residents gathered to applaud and cheer them on.
As the echoes of the cadets’ footsteps reverberated through the city streets, it was clear that this event was not just a celebration; it was a declaration of India’s unwavering commitment to the maritime industry. With MANET’s impressive achievements, the government’s visionary goals, and the dedication of all those who gathered, the maritime industry in India was on the cusp of an exciting and transformative journey. The “World Maritime Week Awareness March and Celebration” was not just a one-time event; it was the inaugural chapter of a story that would shape the nation’s maritime future.
