104 HL – GEIMS wishes the greatest sailing career to its DNS Batch 35

The Great Eastern Institute of Maritime Studies recently hosted the Passing Out Parade for the Diploma in Nautical Science course, Batch 35, on December 21st, 2023 at the GEIMS campus. The ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Shri Ajithkumar Sukumaran, Chief Surveyor cum Addnl DG (Engineering), Government of India, and Mr. Sunil Kumar, Head of T&A department and DGM, The Great Eastern Shipping Co. Ltd. Mr. David Birwadkar, Head of the Institute, Capt. Subroto Khan, Principal, Capt. Ghanashyam Deo, Vice-Principal, Mr. Milind Kulkarni, Head of Engineering, and Capt. Ravishankar, Course In-charge greeted the distinguished guests.

The event began with a lengthy presentation that introduced the attendees to GEIMS, followed by a tour to the parade ground. The GEIMS cadets displayed an excellent march past, which was followed by an oath-taking ceremony for the DNS 35 batch cadets. The march past, which was witnessed not only by visitors but also by the cadets’ proud parents, set the tone for the remaining festivities, which transitioned to the GEIMS auditorium for the remainder of the Passing Out Parade.

Capt. Ravishankar, who delivered an overview of the DNS 35 batch’s accomplishments, coordinated the official welcome and start of the programme. It was noteworthy that all cadets in the batch had acquired placements prior to the formal passing out ceremony. A short film created by the cadets provided insights into their lives at GEIMS and was well received by the audience.

The Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, Head of the Institute, and Principal recognised and awarded the academic achievers. Following that, the Head of the Institute and the Principal congratulated the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour. In their remarks to the graduating cadets, the dignitaries gave unique insights into the life of a sailor, providing inspiration and motivation. While David highlighted the hardships that a seafarer faces onboard a ship, Shri. Sukumaran discussed his seafaring experiences to give the cadets a sense of what they will experience as a seafarer and the pride that the Merchant Navy profession provides to an individual.

Following the felicitations and speeches, the cultural programme began, with enthralling performances by cadets from different batches. Singing, dance, and poetry recitals showed the cadets’ unique talents, enthralling the audience. The Vice Principal presented a vote of appreciation at the end of the ceremony.

Aside from the formal events, the gathering marked the occasion with a group shot, highlighting the significance of this landmark in the cadets’ careers. Following that, the visitors were given to lunch and a tour of the site and its facilities. The chief guest also mingled with the graduating cadets and their parents, answering their questions and concerns.

Finally, the Passing Out Parade was a spectacular success, distinguished by immaculate organisation and memorable events. The Institute wishes to thank Shri Ajithkumar Sukumaran for his inspiring lecture, which left a lasting impression on the cadets and all participants.
