IMU Could be Educational Hub of Maritime World

To address the above situation there needs to be a serious introspection about the reasons why ‘IMU’ is not measuring up fast to be one of the TOP in the world. It should share academic excellence, strong support services to the Cadets/Students aspiring to be prominent leaders in the future for our Maritime Industry and in partnerships with others. Finally, emphatically embrace digital transformation.

The time has come to be the best leader for Maritime affairs, above the likes of World Maritime University of Malmo, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and University of Southampton. We should aim to be in future a centre for high quality Maritime education & Research, Centre of Education in Post graduate Maritime and Ocean Education, Research and Professional training which will build global capacity and promote sustainable development, while promoting the roles of women in Maritime Sector and reserving 20% of the places for programmes and courses for female Cadets.

There has to be expert training of the highest standards and dissemination of knowledge conducive to the development of expertise in all aspects of International Maritime Law as well as in legislative drafting techniques. Short courses could be developed. Few fellowships should be offered every year to assist applicants to enhance their maritime related knowledge. The Government with the other Maritime Institutes and Shipping companies must be responsible to seek donor funding for promising eligible candidates.

MERI – which symbolises the birth of Marine Engineering Training in India should strive harder not only to be a Premier Maritime Education and Training Institute in India but also excel in areas of Management and entrepreneurship and Administrative services, and provide/ensure 100% placement in Shipping Companies to start their seagoing career.

• Faculty development for potential growth must be prioritised
• Provide Online courses so that there is broader participation from around the world. This can increase the IMU’s global visibility and reputation.
• A strong Alumni network has to be created involving IMU activities to create Brand Ambassadors
• Encourage collaborations between Faculty Members, Students and Industry
• Attract talented academics and students and follow it up recognising and recording research excellence
• Old laborious domicile rules for admissions need to be modified as they will never help in quality

All the above can prepare the future Cadets for the challenges which they need to encounter in their career and this will lead ‘IMU’ to be the educational hub of the Maritime world.
