Key perceptions on changing regulatory landscape discussed

Driven by the need for safety, sustainability and efficiency, the shipping industry operates in a continually changing regulatory environment. It is imperative to stay abreast on probable causes of damage to equipment, compliance requirements, and emerging trends in inspections in the maritime industry. ClassNK Chennai branch organized a highly anticipated technical seminar on 07th July at Turyaa Hotel Chennai, with a focus to understand the damage potential of distance pieces (SOX scrubbers), compliance with the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) with counter measures, and analyzing Port State Control (PSC) trends and deficiencies. The main debates and learnings from the seminar are outlined in this report.

Mr Yoichi Iga, Regional Manager for the Middle East and South Asia gave the opening remarks. Mr Sumithran Sampath, General Manager for India and Sri Lanka, delivered a quick introduction to the seminar.

Several Technical managers, Marine superintendents and DPAs attended the seminar.

Potential Causes of Damage at Distance Pieces (SOX Scrubber)

Speaking on the potential causes of damage at distance pieces, particularly in the context of SOX scrubbers, Mr S Padala presented case studies and shared insights on factors such as corrosion, erosion, mechanical stress, and chemical reactions that can lead to damage.

Attendees would have gained deeper understanding of the criticality of maintaining distance pieces and the importance of proper installation, monitoring, and maintenance practices.

CII Compliance with Case Studies for Various Countermeasures

Shedding light on the regulatory frameworks and industry initiatives that are driving the adoption of Carbon Intensity Indicators was Mr Sundar Ram where he discussed global agreements, such as the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and the

IMO’s upcoming Carbon Intensity Indicator regulations. He also updated on voluntary programs, collaborative initiatives, and industry best practices aimed at promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

PSC Trends and Deficiencies Port State Control (PSC)

Inspections play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with international maritime regulations and standards. Providing an overview of recent PSC trends and deficiencies identified during

Inspections, Mr Divyal shared insights on common areas of non-compliance, including safety equipment deficiencies, operational deficiencies, crew certification issues, and documentation discrepancies. Participants gained valuable knowledge on how to proactively address these deficiencies to avoid penalties with ClassNK activities like Prime Ship PSC-Intelligence Web services to maintain regulatory compliance.

At the end of each presentation an interactive session with the attendees was conducted and clarification was provided for all the questions from attendees.

The technical seminar has become an annual function for technical managers and ClassNK to have detailed interaction on different issues faced in maritime industry.
