Shri Sushanta Mohan Mukherjee

06.03.1940 – 12.09.2023

Shri Sushanta Mohan Mukherjee was born on 6th March 1940 in a village near Calcutta. On completion of Engineering Apprenticeship, he served 10 years in India Steamship Company.

After leaving sea, he worked briefly in Cochin Port Trust in 1972 and then joined as an Engineer and Ship Surveyor at Kolkata MMD, Directorate General of Shipping. He was in service with MMD and D.G. Shipping in different capacities at Calcutta, Cochin and Bombay for twenty six years and rose to the highest position and retired as Chief Surveyor with Government of India on 1st May 1998.

Thereafter for one year he was a faculty member of L.B.S. College. He was a competent person of International Maritime Organisation for STCW’ 95 compliance and headed the panel of competent persons for Singapore and Maldives and one of the five members committee for the panel for Bulgaria. He was also responsible for preparing IMO model courses for Fire Prevention and Firefighting and Advanced Firefighting. He worked as a panel member for other seven Model Courses written by LBS CAMSAR on behalf of IMO. He was also the head of the group for preparation of volume II of META (Marine Education Training & Assessment) Manual for D.G. Shipping. The META Manual Vol II was published on target date. On his retirement, Institute of Marine Engineers has described him in MER as the Legislative Man of Marine Circle.

In 1999 he joined OERC as its first Principal and was f founding member and Director of OERC Academy, amongst other things which he pioneered.

He also served as the first Dean of Marine Engineering Department of PVPP College of Engineering, where he was responsible for framing Marine Engineering Syllabus for University of Mumbai and was Convener of Syllabus Committee and an Examiner of Mumbai University for Marine Engineering.

Mr Mukherjee had an illustrious Academic and Administrative career, holding various important positions including trusteeship of various port trusts etc, Mr. Mukherjee had intimate knowledge of Indian Maritime scene and Formalities.
He was also a scholar of Sanskrit and a devout follower of Vedanta. He translated two Upnishads, which are ready for publication. An avid music lover, he remains the epitome of a Be ‘Bengali Bhadralok’ and representative of an era gone by, where high level Art and Culture combined with illustrious Service Career.

Mr Mukherjee was unwell the last couple of months and passed away at 02.15 AM on 12th of Sept, 2023.

He is survived by his wife Mrs Laxmi Mukherjee, his son Rear Admiral Subir Mukherjee, his daughter Mrs Sraboni Chaudhuri, a renowned classical singer and the three grandchildren.
