The Extra Master’s classes by The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) has gained a tremendous response from the shipping industry. Expert faculties with immense knowledge attracts the masters.  This year due to raise in COVID cases in India the Extra Master’s classes were conducted online.

The inaugural session for new batch of Extra Master Class Part A was organized in January. Capt BK Jha welcomed everyone for the event. The occasion was graced by Capt KP Jayakumar, Nautical Adviser-Cum-Addl DG (Nautical) and the one who played an important role in getting the Indian council into the International Maritime Organization. Capt Sasikumar Swaminathan, CEO, CMMI introduced the Chief Guest to the audience.

He appreciated CMMI for conducting extra master classes and improving the efficiency of Indian seafarers through such courses. “Extra Master classes have open book exams, wherein you have to put in your knowledge or understanding about the subject and not just mug-up,” said Capt Jayakumar.

When talking about the syllabus for training institutions he assured that the government would be setting up a committee to improve the syllabus.

Capt Yashoverman Sharma appreciated the sailing staff who came forward and registered themselves for the course saying, “Sailing and preparing for the future at the same time, is great.”

Capt Naqueebuddin Kassmi, Capt Tushar Dange and many more seafarers said that, they were wanting to do this course, but they were falling short of time. Now, when the classes where made online, the seafarers can join the course from the ship directly without any hindrance.

The seafarers raised several questions regarding the course for which the dignitaries answered. A question regarding passing percentage was raised for which Capt Y Sharma answered, “There is no passing percentage, it is the amount of knowledge one gains and how you apply the same.”

The class which was scheduled to start in December got rescheduled to January. The typical EXTRA MASTER’s on-line Course shall consist of three Parts (Part A, Part B, Part C), followed by a dissertation (Part D). The sub-modules of ‘Part A’ are as follows:

  • EM 1 01 – Leadership, Management and Human Resources
  • EM 1 02 – Maritime Economics and Finance
  • EM 1 03 – Maritime Law
