45 HL – Importance of Hydrodynamics in Ship Handing

The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) in their series of online monthly lectures invited Capt Puneet Malhotra, Master with M/S Fleet Management to discuss on the ‘Importance of Hydrodynamics in Ship handling’ on 06th May. Several ace personalities from the industry attended the webinar. Capt MP Bhasin, Secretary General, CMMI gave a formal welcome for the session.

 

Capt Gyanendra Singh, Treasurer, CMMI introduced Capt Malhotra as one who has immense knowledge in respect to inspection onboard oil tankers as well as gas tankers.

 

“Best form of learning is teaching, probably all of us as master mariners we learned about ship handling and hydrodynamics at some point of time and in the 3 stages of learning, first is to learn as a knowledge, second stage is when we can write about it and third stage is when we talk about it, so this will be like a refresher for most of us,” said Capt Singh

 

“Practical or pragmatic knowledge I have and which has been in a way inculcated into youngsters and the kind of feedback I received was good and that’s the reason I am taking lot of lectures for masters and mooring masters worldwide,” stated Capt Malhotra.

 

He taught importance and relevance of practical knowledge and practical seamanship in cognizance of hydrodynamics with respect to Ship handling. “Issues related to vessels manoeuvrability and ship only are among the most frequent causes of accident at sea,” said Capt Malhotra.

 

Furthermore, according to some studies the combination of ships and construction fault that impair manoeuvrability and force majeure is responsible for about 20% of all HOE casualties.

 

He also touched upon the main factors, which vessel’s manoeuvrability/Ship handling with reference to hydrodynamics.
